Dental care for tooth injuries

If you have lost a tooth, broken it, or chipped it, you may experience pain and anxiety. No matter the size or severity of the injury, it’s crucial to seek treatment immediately to prevent further damage.

What causes tooth injuries?

There are various culprits that can cause tooth injuries. For instance, eating hard foods, grinding teeth, or being hit in the face can lead to tooth cracks or chips, and in severe cases, tooth loss.

In addition, contact sports are also a common cause of tooth injuries. Wearing a fitted mouthguard is essential if you play contact sports. However, dental injuries can be prevented by wearing mouthguards. Ask us about our custom-fitted mouthguards at your next appointment.

What should I do when an injury occurs?

When sustaining a mouth injury, the most important thing you should do is to see your dentist right away. It’s crucial to let us know you have a tooth injury so we can work you into our daily schedule.

If a mouth injury has occurred, follow these steps until you can get into your dentist’s office.

  1. Gently rinse your mouth with water.
  2. Apply an ice pack or cold compress to your face to reduce swelling.
  3. If possible, soak the tooth fragment in milk and bring it to your appointment.

When you experience a dental emergency, it’s imperative to have your mouth evaluated by a dentist. As a result, this can help stop the progression of further damage to the mouth. Moreover, an evaluation by your dentist will help ensure the jaw and surrounding teeth are in good condition.
