You may hear the term family dentistry and wonder what does that mean? Simply put, family dentistry is dental care at every age and stage of life, including children and teenagers.
What Do Family Dentists Do?
Family dentists are trained to do dental procedures on all ages. This means you and your children can come to the same dental practice. Family dentists provide the following services:
Teeth Cleaning and Education – A family dentist will start with preventative care and ensure every member of your family knows how to properly brush and floss. In addition, your dentist will provide teeth cleanings every six months, with a dental exam including x-rays of your teeth. For children, the dentist will check to make sure their teeth are developing properly. A family dentist will also do fluoride treatments and apply sealants on teeth for children to prevent cavities in the back molars.
Dental Repair – Your family dentist will repair your teeth that have cavities with fillings. Dr. Barker also performs CEREC same-day crowns, bridges, and certain root canals and extractions for patients who need those services. For patients who need orthodontics, Dr. Barker offers Invisalign.
Gum Health and Treatment – Gum health is essential to good oral health. Many family dentists offer periodontal maintenance including gum scaling and root planing to treat gum disease. This involves scraping tartar away from your teeth and under the gum line.
Other Services from Dr. Barker – Dr. Barker also provides cosmetic dentistry including teeth whitening and cosmetic bonding with BIOCLEAR. Additionally, she provides gentle dentistry for patients of all ages. She believes in doing what she can to reduce fear of the dentist including offering laughing gas for any procedure.
